U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed (D-MI) held a press conference to address the proliferation of anti-Muslim sentiment that surrounded his campaign. "It's a conversation we unfortunately have to have yet again about what it means to be American in a place that could not be more American," Mr. El-Sayed said. His remarks came days after anti-Islam activist Jake Lang held a protest in Dearborn, Michigan. Mr. El-Sayed, who identifies as a Muslim himself, had faced criticism from Jewish Democratic lawmakers for his association with progressive commentator Hasan Piker, who had previous controversial statements on the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. "I don't care how you pray," Mr. El-Sayed said, "you deserve a good home." He would go on to face Republican nominee Mike Rogers in the November 3rd, 2026 general election, which the nonpartisan Cook Political Report rated a "Toss-up."
